In our last blog post, we talked about how fatigue often causes women in the trades to quit their jobs when they should be flourishing. Today, we will talk about ways to help us flourish in our chosen trade while maintaining balance.
In the traditionally male-dominated trades industry, women often face numerous challenges that can lead to fatigue and, unfortunately, cause them to give up on their careers. Navigating physical exhaustion, societal stereotypes, and the balancing act of work and family can be overwhelming. Still, with the right strategies, women can overcome these obstacles and continue thriving in their chosen fields. This blog post aims to provide guidance and insights for women in male-dominated trades on how to avoid burnout and maintain a successful, fulfilling career.
1. Prioritize self-care
Physical exhaustion is a common challenge faced by anyone working in physically demanding trades, regardless of gender. However, for women in male-dominated fields, the pressure to prove themselves can often exacerbate this exhaustion. To avoid fatigue, it is crucial that women prioritize self-care. Regular exercise, a well-balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques can all contribute to maintaining physical and mental well-being. There are many different ways we can provide our own self-care. Hobbies are a great way to take our minds off stress. I personally love reading and horseback riding. When I am on the back of a horse I am free from all the stress of the week. Find something you love and MAKE the time to do it. a Spa day, wine tastings with friends, meditation, and prayer are some of the many ways that women de-stress. Find what works for you.
2. Build a support network
Creating a strong support network can make a world of difference in managing the unique challenges that women in trades face. Connect with other women in similar roles through networking events, industry groups, or online communities. Sharing experiences, advice, and resources can offer a sense of camaraderie and help combat feelings of isolation. Additionally, developing relationships with mentors or finding a coach who understands the industry dynamics can be immensely beneficial in navigating both personal and professional challenges. I am a part of several online groups, and it's a great way to share and connect. Many of us share the same stressors no matter what trade we work in. This website will soon have courses and mentorships available, so check back often or join the mailing list for updates.
3. Challenge stereotypes
Overcoming stereotypical attitudes is a continuous battle for women in male-dominated trades. Instead of internalizing or being discouraged by these stereotypes, use them as motivation to prove them wrong. Showcase your skills, knowledge, and expertise by consistently delivering outstanding work. Seek opportunities to train others to establish your credibility within the industry further. By challenging stereotypes through action, women can gradually reshape perceptions and pave the way for future generations. While challenging the stereotypes, we must maintain balance. Screaming, throwing fits, and insults can often make things worse instead of better. Learn how to speak with authority without crossing the line. The line is thin. It can be especially difficult when you deal with pride and narcissistic attitudes. Don't play the blame game, either. It is not always male attitudes that hold women back. Often women are held back by their own self-limiting behaviors.
4. Set boundaries and manage expectations
The juggling act of work and family responsibilities can take a toll on anyone, especially women in trades who often encounter societal expectations and gender roles. Establishing clear boundaries and communicating your needs with colleagues and loved ones is crucial. Learning to delegate tasks, asking for support when necessary, and setting realistic expectations can help alleviate stress and prevent burnout. Remember, it's okay to say no sometimes and prioritize your well-being.
5. Continuous learning and professional development
To stay competitive and counter the fatigue that can lead to career dissatisfaction, women in trades should invest in continuous learning and professional development. Seek out training programs, certifications, and workshops that enhance your skills and knowledge. By staying up-to-date with industry trends and advancements, you can remain confident in your abilities and create opportunities for career growth and advancement. Again, once set up, this website will be a place of learning and development. Classes will be set up and maintained where women (and, in some cases, men) can learn at their own pace.
While the challenges faced by women in male-dominated trades may seem daunting, with the right strategies, perseverance, and a supportive network, it is possible to strike a balance between work, family, physical exhaustion, and stereotypes. Women can overcome fatigue and thrive in their chosen careers by prioritizing self-care, challenging societal norms, setting boundaries, and investing in continuous learning. Let us embrace the opportunity to break the barriers, inspire future generations, and create a more inclusive and diverse workforce within the trades industry.
